Colonel Light Gardnes:model garden suburb

Christine Garnaut

Adelaide was proud of being fully planned when Australia’s first garden city experiment was launched there in 1917 by one of the British garden city movement’s disciples, Charles Reade (1880-1933). This most benevolent form of modernism changed Australian city-making forever. Accounts for the origins of the plan, the site for its application, and changes that have occurred since the first land sales in 1924, including resident activism and inclusion in the Register of the National Estate.
