Lord and Lady Monteagle helped over 730 Irish men and women to come to Australia on 66 ships in a migration chain that ran from 1838 to 1858. Each emigrant is traced from cabin to colony, from hearing about emigration, to reporting back to those they left behind from settlement areas like Sydney and Melbourne, and Pakenham, Victoria, and Jugiong-Tumut and Bathurst-Orange, NSW. The authors show how emigration worked for some families and provide full transcripts of many of their letters.
