1798 directed the destinies of the ‘Tellicherry Five’ in unimagineable ways. After heady days of victory, Michael Dwyer led a band of Wicklow men in a rearguard action for five years. Dwyer, Hugh Vesty Byrne, Martin Burke, Arthur Devlin and John Mernagh, and their wives and families, settled in NSW where they ran into trouble from autocrat, Governor Bligh. Yet they persisted; and founded families, farms and the principles of a free society.
